Make or Expand a Rod Holder for Your Boat

My Triton came with a huge rod locker and a rack that only held 6 Rods.
(the original were the right hand 6 holes. You can only see 4 of them in the picture). No "real" basser can live with only 6 rods. I built a new one expanding on the existing design, but there's no differance if you start from scratch. All you need is a piece of soft/tough plastic like that used in cutting boards. The rod end tubes I used are made to keep golf clubs separated in the bag. I got them at KMart for $.25 a piece. Take a piece of cardboard and cut a pattern to fit at the upper end of your rod locker. Layout how you want to arrange your rods. I used 2 layers of 7 holes. I think the 2 layers is about right. More than that and the reels start tangling. Try the various Xmarts and Dollar stores for a cutting board that's the right size. Drill holes the diameter of the tubes. Cut plastic to match your cardboard pattern, mount it to existing
cross piece or angle brackets, and your in business. I also added an additional butt holder to keep the reels separated in the back. It is another piece of 1/4" plastic cut the width of the rod locker at a point about 6-8" forward of the back rod rests. By staggering the reels between the original and new rests, you end up with a reasonable set of supports.
