Mount
a Running light on Your Engine
I got tired of messing around with the long running light pole and decided
to permanently mount a light on the top of the louvre on my Mercury. It's
wired in to the running light switch by unscrewing the mount for the boat
mounted light, pulling it out and splicing 2 wires to the leads at the base
of the light. The mount is then returned where it was. That way the regular
switch controls the light and you can always use the old one for a backup.
Route the wires through the engine wiring bundle and up the back of the
cowl. I put in a 2 wire socket at the point the wires go by the place where
the cowl splits when you lift it up. That way, you can easily disconnect
the wires when you have to take the cowl off to work on engine. Wires are
routed up through rubber plug between cowl and louvre. The light itself
came from an auto parts place and is a standard truck side light. You have
to drill about a 1/2" hole through the louvre and then mount the light with
2 stainless screws that come with the light. Costs about $5.
