How to install "X" Series Spring Seats in your older Triton
I liked the idea of the spring seats that are new with the "X" series
Triton model. The price of the new Tritons was more than I wanted to pay
for an upgrade so after a couple of checks with dealers and Triton said
the new seats could fit in my "99" TR-20, I ordered them. The good news
is that they did indeed fit fine. The bad news was they didn’t just
drop in. I didn’t have a center seat in my TR-20, but if you have
one, don’t expect it to still fit. The new seats are a couple of
inches wider, so you’ll have to give up the center seat or narrow
it some how. I took a couple of pictures of the new and old seats so you
can see what needs to be done. The old seats have a hook in the large
“L” bracket on the back of the seat. This hook holds the back
of the seat in place against the front of the rear deck. The new seats
are flat there. I don’t know what holds the new seats in the new
boats, but to fit the way the old ones did, you either need to swap the
entire new bracket for the old one or bolt the old bracket across the
new one. The new bracket goes up higher on the seat than the old one did
(see picture) so I wanted the added strength of both brackets. I’m
not sure this is necessary, but it makes me feel better. I removed the
“L” bracket from both the new and the old seat and used the
new seat bracket as a template to drill out the old bracket where the
new seat had bottom holes. (see picture). I then had to elongate the holes
in the bottom of the old bracket so they would align when it was over
the top of the new bracket. The only other thing you need to do is to
remove the small bracket from the front lip of the old seat and put it
in the same spot on the new seat. This bracket holds the lip of the seat
down on the edge of the seat platform.
