Some of the big girls finally came out to play at Leesville BASSMaster's latest tournament at Buckhorn Reservoir in Bailey, NC. We arrived to a light breeze and a comfortable 60 degrees at blast-off. Water temps were in the low 60s. Clear skies reigned for the day, and the early-morning light breeze was replaced by a steady 10-15 mph wind that blew out of the SSW for the majority of the day.
When all fish had been called to the scales, rookie Mike Lee took home his second consecutive 1st place finish (2 fish, 10.18 lbs), followed closely by Mark "Connections" Cannon in 2nd (2 fish, 9.55 lbs) who also took big fish for the day with a 6.19 lbs chunk. Finishing in 3rd was Wes House (1 fish, 6.06 lbs). Duke Bevard was the only other member to bring fish to the scales (1 fish, 3.42 lbs). Our next tournament is in two weeks on April 28 at Jordan Lake in Apex, NC. We're expecting fish will be hitting the beds hard over the next two weeks, and it should make for an interesting tournament. A blustery, cold NNW wind greeted Leesville BASSMasters at Hibernia ramp on Kerr Lake on March 3rd, and while skies were clear and sunny, the stiff wind would linger for the remainder of the day. Temps were in the mid 30s at blast-off, topping out in the mid-50s by weigh-in. Water temps were in the low 50s.
After all boats returned to the ramp and the catches were weighed, Tournament Director Wes House claimed 1st place (3 fish, 9.82 lbs) anchored with a 6.53 lb kicker. Asst. Tournament Director Sheldon Godfrey claimed 2nd (1 fish, 2.59 lbs), followed by Duke Bevard in 3rd (1 fish, 2.49 lbs). Jim Simons (1 fish, 2.41 lbs) and Mark Cannon (1 fish, 2.14 lbs) also weighed fish. Tom Robertson, Mike West, Mike Langer, Mike Lee and 2017 Champion Craig Koefler did not bring fish to the scales today. Our next tournament will be a two-day event at Falls Lake on March 24 & 25, and we're looking forward to somewhat milder conditions. Leesville BASSMasters is pleased to announce our tournament schedule for the 2018 season. Tournament Director Wes House provided the details on our twelve tournaments, which includes stops at Kerr(2), Falls(2), Randleman, Jordan(2), Gaston(2), High Rock, and Mayo lakes. Our July tournament destination will be finalized by a vote by our membership at the February 1 meeting.
Our tournament trail kicks off in early March at Kerr Lake and concludes back at Kerr in early November. We're looking forward to the start of what looks to be a great tournament trail. Interested in joining us? We're currently looking for boaters to join us for the 2018 season, so Contact Us if you'd like to be considered for membership. Overcast skies and a cold NE wind greeted Leesville BASSMasters as we arrived to fish our final tournament at Lake Gaston on November 4. It was a stark contrast from the days leading up to Saturday, which were mostly bluebird skies devoid of wind. Thanks to the gracious hospitality of fellow member Jim Simons and his family, who were vacationing at a house on the lake, most members were able to spend the night and avoid having to drive up that morning.
After all fish had been brought to the scales, it was somewhat ironic that our Top 3 anglers for the season finished in their respective order in the last tournament. Craig Koefler took 1st place with a five fish limit at 5.78 lbs. Partner Tom Robertson followed closely in 2nd place with four fish at 5.38 lbs, and took big fish honors with 1.50 lb. Duke Bevard finished in 3rd with three fish weighing in at 4.06 lbs, and partner Sheldon Godrey finished in 4th with one fish at 0.92 lbs. Jim Simons did not bring fish to the scales. Of our anglers who caught fish, all noted that while they caught numbers of fish on tournament day, quality fish remained elusive. Well, that's a wrap folks! The 2017 season has come to an end. Congratulations to our 2017 champion, Craig Koefler, and our 2nd and 3rd place anglers, Tom Robertson and Duke Bevard. A second round of congratulations are also in order for Tom, whose 6.98# bruiser caught in early March in Tournament #1 at Shearon-Harris took big fish honors for the year. Falls Lake greeted Leesville BASSMasters with a welcome chill in the air when we arrived at Upper Barton's ramp today with bluebird skies and temps in the mid-40s, and water temps in the upper 60s. After an extended indian summer throughout most of the month of October, temps have finally started to drop to their more normal fall range.
When all the fish were brought to the scales, newly minted boater Wes House came away with the win with four fish weighing 7.57 lbs, followed closely in 2nd by Duke Bevard with a five fish limit at 7.21 lbs. Third place finisher Tom Robertson weighed in two fish at 4.33 lbs, anchored by a 3.67 that took big fish honors for the day. Craig Koefler and Sheldon Godfrey both weighed in one fish each (1.29 lb & 0.77 lb, resp.) Former Leesville member Malcolm Rawls joined us today, and weighed in a five fish limit with one dead fish for a net weight of 6.30 lbs. With one tournament remaining in the season, Craig has nearly secured first place for the 2017 season. Because Tom will drop two pts as a result of having fished all twelve tournaments, even with a first place and big fish finish at Gaston, Craig needs only to fish the final tournament to be crowned the champion, regardless of whether he brings anything to the scales. There's also still a chance that Duke, currently in third, could potentially wrest second place from Tom should he fail to catch a fish at Gaston and Duke finishes high in the standings. Stay tuned folks! Our last tournament of the 2017 season will be on November 4 at Lake Gaston. Second and third are still a horse race and positions could change next weekend. Check back here next weekend to find out how the final standings shake out for Leesville BASSMasters' 2017 season! |
