Have you ever looked at one of your reels and wondered, "Hmmm, did I put fluorocarbon on that one...or was it mono?" It's easy to do especially if you use both clear mono and clear fluoro. Well, here's a quick, easy way to figure out what you're working with. While the poor guy in the video below got fleeced purchasing fake Seaguar blue label "fluorocarbon" from China for $8.50 per spool (umm, yeah, that was bogus from the git go), his test showing it's not fluoro works like a charm. Quite simply, mono burns (it's nylon, after all) while fluorocarbon will not. If you're not sure which type of line you spooled up the last time, just hit the end with a Bic and you'll have your answer in a flash!
The FG Knot is a very small, extremely strong, 100% break strength knot for tying braid to fluoro (it works great for mono, too!). I can tell you from my own personal experience that it doesn't catch on your guides or spool like a Modified Alberto often does, and it absolutely flies through your guides. However, it's a bit more challenging to tie, especially on the water. Sunline Pro Staff member J. P. DeRose shows what I consider to be a much easier way to tie an FG Knot, including a great tip for keeping the proper amount of tension on the line during the tie as well as a much more secure way to finish the knot off and lock it in place. Enjoy and good luck!
